Our Heritage Project Expertise

Specialist renovation skills to fulfil the specifications required by Historic England.

UKG has worked on a range of heritage-related projects. The most significant being elements of the considerable structural renovation and redevelopment of the London landmark, Battersea Power Station. Our team has been on-site for over 4 years and uses an extensive range of specialist skills, many that are specified by Historic England, to ensure that all works fully respect the architectural importance of this most iconic of Grade II listed buildings.

We have also worked on other prestigious heritage projects including The Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle, which also comprises many Grade II listed buildings, as well as current projects such as the redevelopment of Whiteleys of Bayswater and Enterprise House, the Grade II Listed former vinyl factory near Heathrow Airport.

Our Heritage Case Studies

Concrete Repair Specialist for £1.87 Bn Battersea Power Station Redevelopment

UKG were retained as the concrete repair specialist for the redevelopment of Battersea Power Station, the iconic 1930’s structure and one of London’s most recognisable Grade II listed landmarks.

Working closely with Buro Happold for engineering and Wilkinson Eyre for design, we stabilised the historical concrete following the demolition of the original structure. We then had the responsibility of making the work sympathetic to the vision of the newly improved structure, incorporating the residential requirements, the commercial retail element and the inclusion of Apple’s new campus. In addition, we have had to integrate our works with nearly 3,500 other operatives working for 77 different contractors.

The Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle Restoration

The Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle, an independent day school, in South Kensington, London. The complex comprises a range of both modern and Grade II Listed buildings, part of a group of Grade II Listed terrace houses built in 1857 known as the ‘Cromwell Houses’.

UKG worked with Vinci Facilities and their client to renovate and restore these splendid period properties. We were initially required to remove the existing lead-based coating. This highly regulated work was then followed by extensive repairs and renovations to the defective architectural features using Roman Cement. The final finish was achieved using specialist masonry paint. These activities required us to use materials to comply with Grade II Listed renovation requirements.

Enabling Works & Soft Strip Demolition for Whiteleys of Bayswater Grade II Listed Façade

Whiteleys of Bayswater was opened by the Lord Mayor of London on 21 November 1911 and at the time it was claimed to be the largest shop in the world. The opening of larger shopping centres in the locale meant that in 2018, after a number of changes to its usage, Whiteleys was closed. It is now in the midst of a £1 Bn development to transform it into a Norman Foster-designed mixed-use venue comprising of apartments, a Six Senses hotel, and retail units on the ground floor.

The collonaded façade that will dominate the structure is of particular importance as it is Grade II listed. Every effort is being made to protect this façade. UKG were retained to complete a range of enabling works and soft strip demolition to the façade to allow for the reinstatement of the renowned Whiteley’s external columns and rotundas.

Concrete Repairs for Grade II Listed Former Vinyl Factory

Enterprise House is a building heaped with history, from being the home of the former gramophone factory to the home of the record producing giants, Thorne EMI. The building is Grade II Listed and is also famous for having a somewhat unusual water tower perched at the very top and centre of the building.

UKG were contracted to take care of all concrete repairs. Using specialist contractors, we have been able to take on the removal of the present Crittall windows to aid the replacement of these important architectural features. This exposed the poor quality of the structure and lead to UKG providing a complete repair package using the Sika range of products. The fabric repairs must be consistent with the requirements of English Heritage and sympathetic to the original build.
